Floating DiffuserSolid Diffuser
A floating diffuser is a piece of material (usually white or ivory) attached to an inner ring on the bottom of a hanging lampshade to hide the bulb from direct view. There is an open space (about 1" minimum) around the diffuser to allow for easier cleaning and the removal of insects or dust that collect in the fixture. This style diffuser is permanent and cannot be removed. The bulb may have to be changed from above. However, some shade styles require a completely solid diffuser with no space around the circumference. This style diffuser can be removed or tilted for cleaning. However, it will have to be pressed back into place by reaching into the shade from above. We also offer a plexiglass diffuser that is mounted to the shade using a cross bar (washer top) on the bottom or top of the shade. The diffuser screws into the center of the crossbar with a small finial or finished nut. It can be removed by simply unscrewing the nut. Plexiglass diffusers are always floating style diffusers although the gap around the circumference can be minimized to less than 1" for more overall coverage. When ordering a shade for a table lamp or a floor lamp, a diffuser is not needed unless it is used ON TOP of the shade to prevent the light from coming straight up and out of the top of the shade. A top diffuser will always be a floating diffuser style. All diffuser types are available in a wide range of colors.
